The type of smile you share with the world can communicate a lot about you.

While it might seem that there are only two ways to smile— closed mouth or open— our smiles are actually a lot more complicated.

Studies suggest there are 19 types of smiles, which can convey a wide range of emotions including joy, apprehension, contempt, and even anger.

Although smiles can be difficult to interpret, one thing remains clear— closed-mouth smiles are the least likely to communicate pure happiness.

In this case, our patient was choosing to smile with her lips because she was not a fan of her “small and crowded teeth.”
