A Reflection From Dr. Lemchen on Veteran’s Day

“In the early 70s, I was stationed in Japan at Yokota Air Force Base. The base was home to almost 5,000 family members of Air Force members stationed in and around Japan during the Vietnam war.

Not long after arriving at Yakota, I was made the Officer in Charge of a small dental clinic located in the elementary school of the base.

The dental rooms were drab and dark, being sent to the dental clinic was not a pleasant assignment for the students or the dentist.

With the help of two very talented teachers…we began to redecorate the dental clinic, stepping somewhat out of the bounds of normal Air Force procedures.

We redid the reception room with a Snoopy theme, bought fabrics at the local shops, reupholstered donated furniture, and painted Air Force property bright yellow and blue.

The success of the project and the happiness of our patients, soon made the School Dental Clinic a stop for any officials visiting Yakota.

These are but a few pictures of our clinic and the staff with which I was privileged to work.”
